A member of our Physio Med network is all set to accompany the British team to the World Transplant Games in July.
Alison Bloxham, owner of Kendal Physiotherapy & Sports Injuries Centre, is the team physiotherapist for the British squad, providing treatment for athletes with musculoskeletal injuries. The World Transplant Games, which this year take place in Durban, South Africa between July 27th and August 4th, publicly and visibly demonstrate the benefits of successful organ transplantation. The Games increase public awareness of transplants with the aim of increasing organ donation, as well as promoting the full rehabilitation and wellbeing of the participants. The Games involve a wide variety of sports including cycling, volleyball, tennis, squash, badminton, table-tennis, golf, swimming, as well as a full athletics programme.
Alison is a long standing supporter of Transplant Sport UK, a charity dedicated to promoting the benefits of organ donation through sport and promoting sport for those who have had a life-saving organ transplant. She has volunteered at both the British UK and World Games games for 12 years, assisting with players physiotherapy needs.
Alison said: ‘At the games I treat injuries sustained during competition, give pre-and post- competition massage to the athletes and provide moral support as well where required! The games encourage transplant patients to regain fitness whilst promoting friendship and co-operation between individuals concerned with transplantation’
